Police continue to search for a person involved in a home invasion in Phoenix that left one intruder dead Wednesday night, officials say.

The intruder was one of two men who police say forced their way into an apartment near 19th Avenue and Thunderbird Road and held the occupant at gunpoint as one of the men ransacked a bedroom.

The resident had grabbed a firearm prior to opening the door to the intruders when he heard them knocking, said Sgt. Trent Crump, a Phoenix police spokesman.

At one point, the resident exchanged gunfire with one of the armed intruders. Police said the intruder, a 23-year-old man, died after being shot. The resident was uninjured.

Crump said the other intruder escaped out of a bedroom window after hearing gunfire, though it was unclear who fired the fatal shot, Crump said.
