Obama’s brief remark speaks volumes on gun control failure

It was only a single sentence in President Obama’s speech about the Navy Yard shootings, but it spoke volumes about his inability to enact gun control in Congress.

“By now,” Mr. Obama said, “it should be clear that the change we need will not come from Washington, even when tragedy strikes Washington.”

To some gun control advocates, the president’s comment sounded like surrender to supporters of the Second Amendment in Congress, at least for now.

“It says it to me — it says that he’s being realistic and knows that nothing is going to pass,” said Elliot Fineman, president of the National Gun Victims Action Council. “He’s run into the reality that our side has run into for 19 years. They’re not going to get the votes.” . . .

LAMBRO: Obama clings to his gun-control issue

The root cause of most mass shootings is mental illness
Wednesday, September 25, 2013

It is alarmingly evident by now that Barack Obama’s presidency is drifting as he clings to his party’s ideological beliefs and narrowing base of support in a sea of troubles.

He began his second term with no core agenda, except to continue playing the role of the nation’s chief executive, paying lip service to the problems confronting our country, making excuses for his failed policies, and ignoring reality when it didn’t fit into his government-centered mindset.

A most shameful example of this came Sunday when Mr. Obama delivered a memorial address near the Washington Navy Yard, where 12 people were fatally shot by a Navy contract worker with a record of psychotic, violent, gun-wielding behavior.

The tragedy of the Sept. 16 shootings, beyond the loss of so many lives at the naval facility, was the shocking fact that many government agencies knew about the gunman’s violent past, but he was given security clearance to military bases anyway.

Obama Says Fight for Gun Laws ‘Ought to Obsess Us’

Sunday, 22 Sep 2013 06:48 PM

President Barack Obama on Sunday memorialized the victims of the Washington Navy Yard shooting by calling for a transformation in the nation’s gun laws to address an epidemic of gun violence, saying, “There’s nothing inevitable about it.”

Reprising his role of the nation’s consoler in chief after yet another mass shooting, Obama said Americans should honor the victims of last Monday’s shooting by insisting on a change in gun laws. “It ought to obsess us,” Obama said.

“Sometimes I fear there is a creeping resignation that these tragedies are just somehow the way it is, that this is somehow the new normal. We cannot accept this,” Obama said.

He said no other advanced nation endures the kind of gun violence seen in the United States, and blamed mass shootings in America on laws that fail “to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and dangerous people.” . .
