After a day filled with surprises, the trial of a man accused of armed robbery and kidnapping after a February home invasion is expected to go to the jury Monday.
Closing statements are set for 10:30 a.m. Monday, with the charge to the jury expected to follow.
Even though the state and defense had rested on Thursday, Friday saw a lengthy appearance by lead investigator Lt. Bruce Ferguson who was armed with jail house phone call recordings. Then the 31-year-old Dwight Blalock decided to take the stand in his own defense. He made the decision to testify only after a lengthy conference with defense attorney Mac Pilgrim.
Blalock said that he was not in Douglasville on the day of the robbery, but was instead in Covington with his wife and family. He said he put his son on the bus around 6:30 a.m. and then went back to sleep. At some point his wife talked to him ane once she got home, Blalock said he got mad. She was suppose to cook him something to eat and Blalock said he picked a fight with her. He claimed he then got dressed and went to his mother’s house.. .
