2 Shot in HI

ALLIANCE — An unknown armed home invader shot both a brother and sister between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. Saturday and then escaped on foot from the home of their stepfather on Mill Pond Road.

Capt. James Mitchell of Pamlico County Sheriff’s Department said Tina Garcia and  Jonathan Garcia, both thought to be in their early 20’s, were transported for treatment to CarolinaEast Medical Center by Pamlico County EMS following an incident, which apparently left both shot in the leg.

Their stepfather and owner of the doublewide residence, Brian Quarles, scuffled with the invader in an attempt to disarm and subdue him, Mitchell said. Based on information gathered so far, Quarles was bit in the back during the encounter which occurred after the home invader gathered the whole four-person family into one room.

It is not known whether he was able to retrieve the handgun used by the “perpetrator” who Mitchell said was described as a male about five feet eight inches tall. The man left without taking anything.

“He was covered so the rest would be an assumption,” he said. “The family didn’t have a clue who it was but he was in the house before they knew it.”

“The State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to help with the investigation of this case,” Mitchell said early Saturday afternoon. “Many of the details are still vague right now and we are looking for any help we can get.”

“We want all the help from the public we can get,” Mitchell said. “We will listen to anything anybody knows, saw, thinks they saw; anything is important and vital to this case. We want to get this person off the street.”
