FORT LAUDERDALE — A young couple were tied up and pistol-whipped by burglars at their Tarpon River home before dawn Monday, then leaped from their second-story balcony to get help, neighbors said.

The incident shocked the placid community in downtown Fort Lauderdale and left neighbors frightened and bewildered about why the couple may have been targeted.

Luis Colon, 27, and his girlfriend, Elyse Ehlers, 24, were inside their rented duplex apartment on the 600 block of SW Sixth St. when it was broken into around 6:45 a.m.

Their landlords, Judith and Charles Walton, who live next door in the duplex, said the young couple are very good, quiet tenants who moved in on June 1.

“They jumped off [the balcony] to get away from these people,” Charles Walton said. . .
