Man accused of home invasion, assault

  • Hillsdale, Mich.

HILLSDALE — A Hillsdale man was arraigned Monday in Hillsdale County District Court after he allegedly assaulted a neighbor Sunday afternoon. Bond for Jack William Thomas, 42, was set at $50,000 with 10 percent allowed after he was charged with one count of first-degree home invasion, one count of third-degree home invasion and one count of felonious assualt.

According to Hillsdale City Police, Thomas allegedly broke into a neighbor’s home Sunday afternoon after he believed the neighbor stole a piece of property from him. Thomas was armed with a 2X4 when he broke into the residence.

Court documents said Thomas used the weapon on the victim, but did not intend to commit the crime of murder, although Hillsdale police could not confirm the use of the weapon. The victim had to flee their home in order to call police, who responded shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday.

Judge Donald Sanderson arraigned Thomas via video conferencing as Thomas was at the Hillsdale County Jail. Numerous times during the arraignment Thomas interrupted the judge, who eventually set bond at $50,000 after Thomas wouldn’t let him finish a sentence.

Thomas did ask for a court-appointed lawyer and was granted one. He will return to court on Nov. 6 at 10 a.m. for an examination of the charges. Throughout the arraignment, Thomas denied responsibility for the crimes and Sanderson explained to him that was what the examination was for.

Sanderson may reconsider the bond once Thomas and his lawyer meet next week. If convicted, Thomas faces up to 20 years in prison for the first degree home invasion charge.
