It’s a controversial issue that’s gotten a lot of attention this year….guns.

Many Nebraskans are hoping to pass an initiative that they say, will protect their Second Amendment rights.

Nebraska firearm advocates are teaming up to back the initiative. It’s based off of Senator Janssen’s gun rights bill that never made it out of committee in 2012.

It’s called the Firearm Right Protection Bill, and gun owners around the state are hoping to see it on the ballot in 2014.

To do so, they’ll need thousands of signatures.

If passed, the bill says Nebraska wouldn’t recognize any new federal gun restrictions put in place after July 1, 2012.

Bob Howard helped put the initiative together.

“There are hundreds of million of firearms in the hands of law abiding citizens in this country. 99.99 percent of those have not been involved in a crime and never will be involved in a crime,” he says.

Earlier this year, we talked to associate law professor at UNL, Eric Berger. He told us the Constitution makes it very clear, federal law always trumps state law. . .

“Nebraska cannot say that federal law does not apply with in its borders,” Berger says.

Still, many Nebraskans share Howard’s view.
