Deputies investigate Plant City home invasion, shooting

Tuesday, October 22, 2013 7:40am

PLANT CITY — Deputies on Tuesday were searching for two suspects in a home invasion in Plant City that sent a father and son to the hospital with gunshot wounds the night before.

The crime, which was reported just after 9 p.m. Monday at 5738 Horton Road, was not believed to be a random act, Hillsborough sheriff’s officials said.

It began when two men armed with handguns and wearing hooded sweatshirts showed up at the home of Vincent Shakes, 24, and his girlfriend Michele Hargrove, 22, at 1108 Colson Road, authorities said. The men fired several rounds before tying up Hargrove and forcing Shakes into a silver Dodge Durango. They then drove to Shakes’ parents’ house at 5738 Horton Road, apparently knowing where the family lived, deputies said.

At the home, the men tried to force their way inside, but Shakes’ father, Leaford Shakes, 49, blocked the entrance, trying to hold the door closed, officials said. One of the men fired several rounds through the door, hitting the elder Shakes in his upper body.

It was unclear if the men made it into the home and what, if anything, they took.
