Hamilton residents are being warned to boost their home security after a series of armed invasions over the weekend.

The first happened around 3am on Sunday at a Hillcrest Road home when a woman woke to find a strange man holding her hand.

He fled when she screamed.

20 minutes later, a man arriving at his Orelio Street property was confronted by a man inside the house who pointed a gun at him before again fleeing.

The violence escalated when a young woman in the university halls of residence complex woke to see an armed man bending over her sleeping friend.

There was a brief struggle before the man left.

Police say all three incidents happened within a kilometre of each other, and could be linked.
