A 33-year-old Athens man was injured Tuesday morning when he was beaten and pistol-whipped by masked intruders during a home invasion in east Athens.
Athens-Clarke police said they responded to an apartment in the Nellie B Homes apartment complex where a woman said an injured man who lived in a home nearby had come seeking help. When officers arrived they found the victim lying on the sidewalk outside the apartment, bleeding from numerous injuries that included a head wound, police said.
The victim said he had dropped off his children at a school bus stop that morning and upon returning to his Cone Drive home left the door unlocked for his girlfriend’s return from work. He said he went upstairs to lie down, and was later awakened by two masked men standing over him and pointing handguns, according to police.
The victim told officers he grabbed one of the guns and a struggle ensued, during which the intruders administered a brutal beating. The man had numerous cuts on his back and a puncture wound to his upper back, police said. One of the intruders struck the victim on top of his head with a gun.
The robbers pulled the victim’s pants to his ankles then dragged him downstairs into the living room, where they took a wallet from his pants, police said. The robbers then went into the kitchen looking for more things to steal, giving the victim a chance to run from the apartment and go to the neighbor’s residence, where he called 911.
Police said the victim was unable to provide good descriptions of the armed robbers because their faces were well-concealed by either ski masks or towels. He stated that they “sounded young,” according to police.
A police incident report listed $500 as having been stolen from the victim. The report also states that officers recovered a handgun wrapped in a red bandana, but did not specify where it was found.
The victim’s blood was found splattered in his bedroom and downstairs, according to the report, and hair extensions had been ripped from his head.
He was taken by ambulance to Athens Regional Medical Center.
