HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -The House Judiciary Committee has reported out a bill to toughen the penalties for home invasions.

House Bill 1296 would classify home invasion as a first-degree felony with a minimum penalty of five years at a maximum security prison, or 10 years for a second offense or if the victim is older than 62.

A person could be convicted of home invasion if he or she knowingly enters, attempts to enter, or remains unlawfully in a dwelling with intent to commit a violent crime.

The bill now moves to the full House for consideration.

My daughter’s family lives in a suburb of Harrisburg. We visited up there this summer … during the week we were up there local TV news carried four stories of murder and, or home invasion. The bigger, rougher cities in PA must have a big problem for a law like this to be proposed.
Do any of your readers know if PA has a stand your ground law?
In Alabama, my state, a home invader can get a face full of double-aught buckshot and not have to fear the law as much as s/he does the criminals … kill a crook: that’s OK if the crook is even thinking about harming you or anyone around you.
This proposed PA law will mean something to law abiding people but to bad guys? I think not.

Jim, I don’t know if PA has a stand your ground law. I will have to find out. You are correct that laws will not impede an insurgent but at least they know what they are in for.
