Gun-rights advocate says U.N. gun treaty should concern Americans

A gun-rights advocate is concerned that President Barack Obama might try to use an executive order to implement a U.N. arms treaty that has no chance of ratification by the Senate.

Recently Secretary of State John Kerry signed the controversial United Nations Arms Trade Treaty, which if ratified by the Senate would prohibit the ability of U.S. citizens to obtain certain types of firearms.

Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, says the treaty should be a concern for Second Amendment proponents.

“So any kind of firearm that can be used for the military, as an example, they really don’t want civilians to own,” says Gottlieb. “It tries to extend a European form of gun control to the United States. It opens the door for international control to the United States firearms owners. And it definitely invades our sovereignty and our constitutional rights.”

Gottlieb noted that U.S. Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma has already warned Kerry that the treaty “will collect dust” alongside the Law of the Sea Treaty, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and the Kyoto Protocol, to name a few, which have all been rejected by the U.S. Senate and the American people.

But Gottlieb says President Obama might try to bypass the Senate. . .
